We have home schooled our children for most of their education.with the exception of two year upon or return from the mission fields of France, where we lived for 3 years. We have lived in Tulsa for 3 years now and again returned to home schooling last year and will continue in that direction as the Lord leads. |
| How and why we home school... |
| Home schooling for our family has always been an eclectic adventure. I had taught k-4 in a private school using a well known program. I knew that there was a better way for out family. After Reading Ruth Beechick's books the 3 R's. I jumped in and taught my first son to read very simply... with some sound flash cards, a notebook and some Bob Books and off he went. By the time my 2nd was ready to start my 3rd was born and I need something that was more laid out so we tried 100 easy lessons.. Which was OK, but it bugged me .. So we found Pathway Phonics at the library and it is what I used to finish with my 2nd and used completely for my 3rd and 4th children along with some simple readers.. I recommend it to everyone. It is not flashy with lots of bells and whistles but it works with about 15 minutes a day..http://www.dorbooks.com/.. Reading has been a focus for our family. I haven't always been the best at reading out loud to my children..I was better when the 1st two were younger. But we have always listened to great thing on tape and as they learned to read they read real books more than textbooks. Then while living in France We all started reading much more, even me. Life in someways was slower and more focused and the children more isolated, so we all read...The only problem was we kept running out of books, that is when I learned about online books from http://amblesideonline.org I had read about the Charlotte Mason approach for several years, but not until we were in France did I implement it. It is still my method of choice but I don't use it with every subject. |
